Yoga Psychology  with Dr. David Frawley

LIVE ZOOM + RECORDED

SATURDAY JULY 24TH, 12-2PM (HST), 3-5PM (PST)

6-8PM (EST)

The teachings of Yoga through the Yoga Sutras is primarily a psychology, an examination of the mind and consciousness, extending from the individual to the universal. Yet few students or even teachers of Yoga understand this.

Yoga aims at removing all suffering from the mind, whether short term or long term in manifestation. This yogic understanding of psychological suffering is defined according to the five kleshas or afflictions of non- knowing, egoism, attraction and repulsion and deep-seated clinging to life (avidya, asmita, raga, dvesha, abhinivesha), which we will explain in detail. We will also delineate yogic methods for going beyond psychological suffering, which requires transcending the ego-mind and its karmic patterns.

This includes the role of all eight limbs of Yoga in psychological healing, from Yamas and Niyamas to meditation and samadhi, including how to develop the buddhi, our deeper discriminating intelligence and insight.

The role of mantra, pranayama and pratyahara will be highlighted as well. The ultimate goal of Yoga is the realization of the Pure Consciousness and Bliss (Ananda), but this first requires, calming and harmonizing our individual minds, their disturbances and distractions. We will bring in key teachings of Vedanta and Ayurveda to aid in the discussion. The yogic approach to teaching and teaching and counseling how to go beyond psychological sorrow and unhappiness will be made clear.

Dr. David Frawley (Pandit Vamadeva Shastri),
